Hei Hei Friends and Family,
I hope you all are doing swell.
The weather has cooled down, but things have been heating up in the Hei Hei kitchen in Nelsonville (this summer we moved our operation to the awesome and gargantuan ACEnet facility formerly used by Rocky Boots).
Yesterday we salted beautiful Korean red chili peppers grown by Kara at Attican Farms, made a batch of cucumber kimchi for Saturday’s market, and a small batch of one of Irene’s favorite foods - perilla kimchi.
Lindsay, of Trouvaille Farm, planted the perilla seeds we smuggled from our trip to South Korea (jk…it was totally legal. i’m pretty sure.). It’s always a treat to visit Trouvaille, in the rolling hills a few minutes south of Athens town. The perilla patch is popping off and the napa she grew for our kimchi is looking so good. I can’t wait to help harvest it and bring it to market. We brought the pups with us and they had a lot of fun, until Olive snuck into the goat enclosure.
FALL FUNGI FESTIVAL
This weekend is Fall Fungi Festival at Tenderfoot Learning Lab. This is really fun celebration of mushrooms, nature, and community, featuring hands-on workshops, guided forest hikes, farm tours, cooking demonstrations, and live music.
Irene is giving a cooking demonstration on Sunday at 11 am. She will be sharing information on the amazing qualities of dried mushrooms and teaching how to make japchae, the delicious Korean noodle dish!
Get your tickets here.
Farmers Market Menu
We will have napa kimchi, cucumber kimchi, perilla kimchi, sour corn, and veggie dumplings at the Athens Farmers Market on Saturday. Hope to see you there!
Over and out,
Kurt
