Joys of double starch

Joys of double starch

We had a really great time at the Hei Hei popup at West End Ciderhouse this past weekend. Thanks to all that came out - it was so good seeing all your smiling faces!

If you didn’t get to try Kelly’s makgeolli yet, I highly recommend it. There is a limited amount of cans available at Ciderhouse. Also, Melona honeydew ice cream bars are available at Panda Market on State Street.

Plate lunch is something I really love.

At Me BBQ in Waikiki in 2015.

My family moved to Honolulu 20 years ago. We were staying in a condo in Waikiki and right down the street was Me BBQ, a Korean plate lunch spot. I’ll never forget my first plate lunch. My mom ordered two, which was enough to feed our family of four. Each bulging styrofoam compartment tray came with two scoops of white rice and a scoop of mac salad- a protein, in our case it was kalbi (korean short ribs), and a few other sides (kimchi!). It was delicious, it was filling. It was double starch. My parents have since moved to the windward coast of O’ahu, but without fail, I make a trip to Me BBQ everytime I visit.

Plate lunch has its roots on Hawaii’s fruit and sugar cane plantations, where workers from China, Japan, Portugal, the Philippines, and elsewhere brought leftovers from home. Food carts followed, serving hearty, familiar meals.

The elements vary, but the plate always includes rice and mac salad.

Hei Hei plate lunch featured ingredients from 14 local farms and producers, plus my garden!

Thanks go out to:

Attican Farms, CFI Community Garden, Cowdery Farm, HoneyBee’s Bakery, Morning Dew Hop Farm, MoSo Farm, Neng’s Garden, OU Student Farm, Sassafras Farm, Shade River Farm, Veggie Vision Farms, Wagner’s Fruit Farm, Witten Farm, and Wolftree Winery.

We will be at the farmers market this weekend with dumplings and kimchi. We will have a variety of seasonal dumplings in stock including our three sisters dumplings featuring sweet corn from Witten Farm, and yellow squash and pole beans from Shade River Farms.

See ya at the market,

Irene
